County issues warning about viral video promoting fake tax relief programs

A series of AI-generated videos claiming false information about a "Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request" has prompted numerous St. Louis County residents to contact the County Auditor's Office and Assessor's. Department. These videos contain numerous false claims about a supposed change in federal law. The programs and forms described do not exist.

"We don't know the motivation of whoever is posting these videos. They certainly sound convincing," said Mary Garness, St. Louis County Public Records and Property Valuation director. "But unfortunately, they are not true, and we want to alert people so that no one falls victim - either by paying money or sharing personal information - to someone who claims they will access these programs on their behalf."

St. Louis County provides information on its website about property tax refunds and other programs that may help reduce a person's property taxes. This information can be found at Programs or by calling 218-726-2304. These are all programs offered by the State of Minnesota and are available in all counties in Minnesota.

As a reminder, the deadline for homeowners to apply for a property tax refund is August 15.
