ATV accident near Ely
On July 3, 2026 at approximately 9:05 PM, first responders and law-enforcement were dispatched to the report of an ATV accident near the intersection of Grant McMahan Blvd. and Gold Mine Road located in Morse Township west of Ely.
It was reported that a side-by-side type of ATV being driven by a 17-year-old female, with a 20-year-old female occupying the passenger seat, was attempting to make a U-turn in the road. It was reported that the driver accidentally depressed the gas pedal rather than the brake pedal causing the ATV to leave the roadway and strike a tree in the ditch.
The 17-year-old driver sustained no injuries while the 20-year-old passenger sustained what our belief to be non-life-threatening injuries. She was later transported to the hospital.
Neither of the ATV occupants were wearing a helmet nor seatbelt.
Driver, unfamiliarity and speed are being considered as contributing factors to this accident.
The incident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
