Construction begins on Hwy 100 in Aurora; detours start June 10

Work begins this week in Aurora to reconstruct and resurface Highway 100 from Trunk Highway 135 to the railroad crossing, as well as several adjoining streets along the corridor. This is a multi-phase project involving St. Louis County Public Works and the City of Aurora that will result in safer and more efficient travel for motorists and pedestrians.

Beginning Wednesday, June 10, traffic will be detoured onto Erie Street and Central Avenue. Large trucks will be directed to detour on Highways 4, 111 and 100. The work is expected to last until November, and then resume in the summer of 2027. The reconstruction is needed because the infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life and is in need of improvement.

As part of the project, the County will build a mini-roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and 3rd Avenue North, construct a raised median on 3rd Avenue North between Erie Street and Hill Street, and install enhanced pedestrian crossings on 3rd Avenue North at Hill Street and 1st Street. The overall width on Main Street will be narrowed to accommodate larger sidewalks while maintaining parking lanes. Additionally, a sidewalk will be added on the south side of 3rd Avenue North between Erie Street and Hill Street.

Meanwhile, the City of Aurora will replace water and sewer utilities; re-align 3rd Street between Mesabi East School and 3rd Avenue to improve access to the campus; construct a non-motorized trail along 1st Avenue, extending the Mesabi Trail from Pine Grove Park to the downtown business district; and other details.

The reconstruction project is based on the layout developed from the CSAH 100 Corridor Study, which has included numerous public input sessions over the last several years. The total project cost is $21 million. Ulland Brothers is the contractor for the project.
