St. Louis County actively monitoring multiple wildfires
*****UPDATE ON THE BOTTOM********
With eight wildfires currently burning in St. Louis County, the County has activated its Emergency Operations Center to ensure a coordinated response and shared information on the existing fires, and due to concerns of additional fires that could start during the extreme fire risk conditions. St. Louis County Emergency Management, the Sheriff's Office, Public Health and the National Weather Service Duluth are working together in the response.
Absolutely no outdoor burning should be occurring right now due to the high winds and dry conditions. Early indications are that several of the current fires were started by residents burning cardboard. Some others are the result of trees knocking down power lines.
The National Weather Service in Duluth has reported wind gusts of 30-40 miles per hour this afternoon. Wind speeds are expected to lessen by around 9 p.m. this evening, and humidity levels are expected to improve, though the fire risk will remain elevated through tomorrow.
********UPDATE**********
Currently, all eight of the fires we previously reported on have been controlled and mop up operations continue. In some areas fire personnel will remain in the area and monitor. Area citizens should remain alert and report if there are any flare ups.
Today in St. Louis County we had a total of 17 wildfires. Please remember how dry the current conditions are and we continue to advise against any outdoor burning.
