Fatal boat accident
On May 12th, 2026, at 6:22pm, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and numerous Rescue Personnel, responded to the 3600 Block of Black Bay Rd, which is on Lake Vermilion, in response to a reported boat accident involving numerous people being thrown from boats and into the water. The crash occurred near Manbeck Island, located in Beatty Twp.
Three people were transported from the scene, via ambulance and one of them was then airlifted to a Duluth Hospital. A fourth party involved, was pronounced deceased at the scene, after life-saving efforts by medical personnel were unsuccessful.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation and the name of the deceased party is being withheld, pending family notification.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Cook Ambulance, Tower Ambulance, Virginia Ambulance, Orr Ambulance, the Lake Vermilion Fire Brigade, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.
UPDATE: The deceased party has been identified as 53-year-old Jeremy Brandon Johnson from Eveleth. The accident remains under investigation.
