Midway Road/North Cloquet Road intersection to close for construction beginning June 8
The intersection of Midway Road and North Cloquet Road in Midway Township has been the site of seven crashes between 2021-2025. Beginning June 8, this intersection will undergo significant work to improve safety and visibility for travelers. During construction, both Midway Road and North Cloquet Road will be closed.
Detours will be posted for the more than 7,000 vehicles that travel this way on an average day. Traffic on Midway Road will be detoured through Proctor, using I-35, Boundary Avenue and Highway 2. Travelers on the east side of North Cloquet Road will be detoured to Lindahl and Stark Roads. For traffic on the west side of North Cloquet Road, there is no posted detour, but several alternative local route options.
As part of the project, St. Louis County Public Works will lower the profile of Midway Road, south of the intersection by about 10 feet to increase sight distance. The project also includes construction of both left and right turn lanes on Midway Road, installation of lighting at the intersection and replacement of the guardrail on Midway Road, south of North Cloquet Road.
Work is expected to last throughout the summer, with the intersection re-opening by the end of August
The County Road Safety Plan (CRSP) ranks this intersection fifth out of 1,488 intersections in the County's system, which places it in the top one percent by risk. St. Louis Count conducted an Intersection Control Evaluation in 2022 and has worked since then to establish fund and finalize design for the project. KGM Contractors of Angora is the contractor for the work.
More information about the project is available online at engage.stlouiscountymn.gov.
