Water Emergency Island Lake Dam
On May 9th, 2026 at 0818, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a water emergency at the Island Lake Dam. It was reported that a canoe had capsized and there were two people in the water with life jackets. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Fredenberg Fire Department and MN DNR also responded.
A 61-year-old Duluth female was pulled from the water by other anglers that were fishing from shore. A 63-year-old Duluth male was pulled under the strong currents but eventually was able to get to shore. He received nonlife threatening injures and was treated by first responders and transported by Mayo Ambulance. The female had no apparent injuries.
As the boating and fishing season are kicking off and in full swing, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to please be careful on and around the waterways. Please wear your life jackets and exercise caution around fast moving, turbulent water.
