Picnic with a Purpose to highlight mental health supports

The North St. Louis County Local Advisory Council is hosting a free community event aimed at breaking down stigma about mental health. Picnic for a Purpose will be Thursday, May 21, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Mt. Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Drive in Mt. Iron.

The event will begin with networking time and opportunity to learn about various community resources. Kyra Kjeldahl from St. Louis County Public Health will give a presentation on reducing stigma through word choices when talking about mental health, as well as provide tips on signs and symptoms to watch for that could indicate someone may be struggling with mental health, and ways to get involved and help. There will also be a panel discussion featuring people with lived experience sharing stories about mental health.

Free food and refreshments will be served.

The advisory council started in the fall of 2020 with the goal of bringing together diverse perspectives on mental health to improve mental health services in our communities. The group works to identify existing resources and provide recommendations to St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services and the County Board regarding changes, additions and improvements needed to local mental health services for children and adults.
