St. Louis County Depot hosts kickoff event for major renovation project

The St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, more commonly known as The Depot, is about to undergo a significant renovation project expected to last two years. To kick off the massive project, County leadership and Depot tenants are hosting a community celebration - Legacy in Motion - on Tuesday, March 3, beginning at 5 p.m. in The Depot's Great Hall.

The public is invited to attend and view artifacts that have been discovered as part of pre-construction work that will be on display along with historical blueprints of the building. Representatives from the County and tenant organizations will talk about what's being planned and the planning and coordination being done to ensure all tenants can maintain operations throughout the project. Attendees can write a note with memories about or hopes for The Depot, which will be compiled as a way to continue preserving the history of this historic building. Some of the notes will be included in a time capsule as part of the project. Light appetizers and open bar will be available.

The Depot has been welcoming visitors to Duluth and St. Louis County since 1892. The County took ownership of the building in 1977 and has since used the space as a center to support arts, culture and history in the region.

The construction project is the largest renovation to The Depot in more than 50 years. It includes replacement of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The work is needed to ensure the building, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places, remains a vibrant community resource for many years to come.

The Depot welcomes an average of 200,000 people a year for special events, as well as to visit tenant organizations, including the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, North Shore Scenic Railroad, Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis County Historical Society, Minnesota Ballet, Lyric Opera of the North, Arrowhead Regional Arts Council and the Depot Foundation.
