Snowmobile crash in Northstar Township

At 4:17 PM today, St. Louis County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a snowmobile crash on a state snowmobile trail in Northstar Township.

Preliminary information indicates a snowmobile crashed while negotiating a sharp corner, injuring the passenger. The driver did not require medical assistance. The passenger, a 37-year-old woman from the Duluth area, sustained serious injuries and was transported by medical sled a considerable distance to Highway 44, where Life Link III Air Medical was staged. She was then flown by Life Link III to a Duluth-area hospital.

Highway 44 was closed for more than an hour to allow for the air medical response. We appreciate the patience of motorists who were delayed during the closure.

Assisting agencies included Northstar and Pequaywan Township EMS, Mayo Ambulance and the St. Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad.
