Fatal snowmobile crash

On Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, at approximately 12:26 P.M., The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was notified of a snowmobile crash on the Arrowhead Snowmobile Trail, approximately 1 mile North of the Sheep Ranch Rd, in Unorganized Township 67-20 (North of Orr, MN).

Information from the 911 caller was that two snowmobiles had collided on the trail, and the driver and lone occupant of one snowmobile had been thrown from their snow machine and was unresponsive.

Multiple first responders and emergency personnel responded to the scene, including Virginia Fire Departments newly established ALS (advanced life support) Sprint Medic. However, despite extensive lifesaving measures, the 57-yr old male from the south metro area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial investigation into the crash indicates that two snowmobiles were driving in opposite directions on the trail, with both machines were being driven by lone occupants. While navigating a curve in the trail, the snowmobiles collided in a side swipe fashion. The victims snowmobile subsequently lost control and rolled several times, ejecting the male operator, who sustained fatal injuries.

The driver of the other snowmobile was not injured in the crash.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the MN DNR, Bois Forte Police Department, Virginia Fire Department Sprint Medic, Life Link III air ambulance, Orr Ambulance, Orr Fire Department, and Kabetogama First Responders.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family.
