Cabin fire on Lake Vermilion

On January 14, 2026, around 1:20 P.M., area Law Enforcement and Fire Departments were dispatched to a cabin fire in rural Greenwood Township. The caller was on a snowmobile when he noticed smoke on Meads Island, Lake Vermilion. Upon further investigation, the caller observed a cabin on fire.

Responders arrived on scene and spoke with the caller. It was learned the caretaker started the furnace for the property owner who was set to arrive later. The caretaker left the property and a fire started inside the cabin. No one was inside and the cabin was a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and not suspicious in nature.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by several fire departments, Law Enforcement personnel, and ambulance service.
