County explores options to make West Arrowhead Road safer for non-motorized traffic

St. Louis County Public Works is developing an Active Transportation Plan to improve safety and travel opportunities along West Arrowhead Road for pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized users. County engineers will host a public meeting to gather input from people who travel on the West Arrowhead Road corridor in Duluth. The meeting will be Tuesday, September 23, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hermantown YMCA, 4289 Ugstad Road in Hermantown. A virtual attendance option is also available on the project website: engage.stlouiscountymn.gov.

The Active Transportation Action Plan specifically focuses on West Arrowhead Road between Haines Road and Rice Lake Road. The planning effort recognizes that, as a pedestrian or bicyclist, it is currently difficult to travel along this segment road due to high traffic volume and limited accommodations for non-motorized users. An additional goal is to improve this corridor to serve as a connector for the regional pedestrian and bicycle network serving the cities of Duluth, Hermantown and Rice Lake.

This meeting will focus on listening to ideas from the public, gaining a better understanding of how they'd like to use the road and how development and other needs should factor into the plan.

The goal is to complete the planning study by the end of the year. It will guide decisions and be used to help leverage federal and state funding opportunities for active transportation implementation projects.

Anyone unable to attend the meeting can still learn more about the project and provide input online by visiting engage.stlouiscountymn.gov or by contacting St. Louis County Public Works Environmental Engineer Carol Andrews at 218-625-3862 or andrewsc@stlouiscountymn.gov
