Capsized kayak along the North Shore

On August 16, 2025 at 1314 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the 5800 block of North Shore Drive for a report of a capsized vessel in the water with no one around. The United States Coast Guard also responded. Deputies located the kayak washed ashore, full of water with no one around along the shoreline of Stoney Point Drive near North Shore Drive. Attempts to contact the registered owner of the kayak were unsuccessful.

Out an of abundance of caution, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, St. Louis County Drone Team, United States Coast Guard and Minnesota Air Rescue Team responded to start the search for anyone in the water, along with the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

During search efforts, the owner of the kayak, not the registered owner, called and it was confirmed it had broken away from where it was secured on shore due to heavier winds and building waves. Everyone was accounted for, and no one was in the water.

The Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to keep their registration current on their boats, canoes, kayaks and other items as the registration often aids in cases like this where it could have been determined where the kayak originally came from and resolved a lot sooner.

The Sheriff's Office would also like to thank their partner agencies for jumping in to assist in initial search and rescue efforts so quickly and efficiently.
