Police Pursuit
On Sunday July 20th at approximately 1138 hours, St. Louis Count Deputies received a COPS alert in connection with Domestic Assault, DANCO Violation, weapons possession (crossbow), and threats to Law Enforcment and the general public advising the suspect would not stop and would crash his vehicle. This incident originated in Isanti County and the suspect was believed to be traveling northbound.
The suspect vehicle was located northbound on Hwy 53 near the Grey Road and a pursuit ensued with attempts to stop the vehicle utilizing spike sticks unsuccessful as the suspect continued northbound. The male suspect crashed through construction barricades coming into the construction zone on the southside of the City of Eveleth. The suspect then struck a St. Louis County Deputy's squad on the passenger side and partially head on. A second squad was able to pull in and pin the vehicle terminating the pursuit. The male suspect was taken into custody. Minor damage to 2 SLC squads and the suspect vehicle were reported. The suspect was taken to Essentia Health Virginia as a precaution and was cleared and lodged at the St. Louis County Jail in Virginia.
Minor injury to a Deputy was reported due to the collision with the suspect vehicle but did not require medical attention at that time.
The suspect is identified as Erik Michael Rust, Age 38, of Ely. Rust was charged with 2nd Degree Assault, Fleeing in a motor vehicle, 4th Degree Assault, Driving after revocation, No Seatbelt, and Littering in addition to the charges he will face in Isanti County.
