Water emergency in Cherry Township

On Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, at approximately 8:55 P.M the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office received a call of a male that had fallen out of his boat in the middle of the lake and was yelling for help, on Six Mile Lake, which is in Cherry Township, East of the city limits of Hibbing, MN.

Deputies and members from the Hibbing and Cherry Fire Departments, along with the St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded to the scene, as well as a homeowner on the lake who had also heard the calls for help.

The group of first responders were able to retrieve the man from the water, who was identified as a 58-yr old male from Hibbing and bring him back to shore uninjured. It was learned that the male was fishing alone in a smaller shallow bottomed boat. When he attempted to pull up his anchor, the boat suddenly took on water causing the boat to swamp, and the man to fall overboard.

Despite being in the water for close to one hour clinging to the swamped boat and a floatation cushion, the victim was uninjured in the incident. The male did have a life jacket on board; however, he was not wearing it at the time of the incident.
