St. Louis County Assessors to begin inspections of wildfire-damaged areas
The St. Louis County Assessor's Department will begin in-person visits next week to inspect properties damaged by the Camp House and Jenkins Creek fires. Staff will begin in Brimson and Fairbanks Township on June 23, assessing and documenting the level of damage. This information will be used to determine the total estimated market value of the improvements damaged, and the percent of damage that occurred.
Property owners may be eligible for property tax relief if their property sustained damage totaling 50% or more of its value, or if the property is homesteaded. Property tax relief may include property tax abatements in the year of the disaster, and property tax credits for taxes payable in the year following the disaster.
Properties qualifying for any property tax relief will be mailed an application form from the St. Louis County Assessor’s Department, along with instructions to return the application promptly in order to be granted relief.
The damage assessment process is expected to take several weeks to complete, given that - coincidentally - reassessment work was also planned for this area.
Property owners with questions about the disaster assessment process, or property tax relief programs should contact the St. Louis County Assessor’s office at 218-726-2304 or visit the county's website at: https://www.stlouiscountymn.gov/departments-a-z/assessor/programs/disaster-relief .
