Local Board of Appeal and Equalization meeting changed for Fairbanks Township due to wildfires
The recent wildfires and accompanying evacuation orders forced the cancellation of the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization (LBAE) meeting in Fairbanks Township on May 14. By the time the evacuation order was lifted, it was too late for the township to give proper notice for a rescheduled meeting.
To serve any property owner in Fairbanks who want to appeal their estimated market value or classification for the 2025 assessment, the St. Louis County Assessor’s Department has set up an alternate appeal process. Property owners wanting to appeal should begin by calling the assessors for the area: Brian Grahek, Appraisal Supervisor, (218) 471-7733; or Max Carlson, Residential Appraiser, (218) 471-7272.
These assessors will explain the revised appeal process and can help schedule an appeal with the County Board of Appeal and Equalization.
Residents should note that the appeal process will not account for the value of property damaged by the recent fires, as the 2025 assessment is based on an assessment date of January 2, 2025. Therefore, whatever existed at that time, has been utilized to determine an estimated market value.
Damaged properties may qualify for Local Option Abatements and Credits, and assessor staff will be visiting these properties as soon as it is safe to do so to determine eligibility for property tax relief.
More information on the assessment process can be found online at: https://www.stlouiscountymn.gov/assessor
