County launches study of Midway Road corridor near Pike Lake

The two-mile segment of Midway Road between Highway 194 in Hermantown and North Pike Lake Road in Canosia Township has a variety of safety concerns including a high density of access points and additional intersections with frontage roads, an aging traffic signal, lack of accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists along a road that is heavily traveled by large vehicles, and other issues.

St. Louis County Public Works is taking a closer look at this segment of Midway Road, as well as a portion of Martin Road that connects to it. To launch this corridor study, county engineers will host a public meeting on Monday, June 2, at 6 p.m., at Hermantown City Hall, 5105 Maple Grove Road in Hermantown. The meeting also will be livestreamed for anyone wishing to attend virtually.

The study will look at driving lane configurations; intersections, including a focus on the intersections of Midway Road at Highway 53 and at Martin Road; on-street parking, pedestrian and bicyclist facilities, including pedestrian crossings; and other issues affecting safe traffic flow.

Drawing on public input, engineers will develop recommended roadway and intersection layouts that will be implemented in future reconstruction projects.

More information about the study, including a link to attend the meeting virtually and the option to sign up for email updates, can be found on the project website: engage.stlouiscountymn.gov. The direct link is: Midway Rd Corridor Study | Engage St Louis County.
