Fuel oil leak in Morse Township

On January 9th, 2025, at approximately 12:43 P.M. The Morse Township Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a fuel oil leak on private property, in the 400 Blk of Sheridan St. W on the edge of the city limits of Ely.

Fire Department personnel estimated that approximately 500-1000 gallons of fuel oil had leaked from the fuel oil storage facility and had been contained in a bermed depression area under the bulk storage tanks. Initial indications are that the storage tanks may have been overfilled causing the leak.

The MN State Duty Officer was contacted, who then advised the MN Pollution Control Agency as well as the Environmental Protection Agency for assistance, who has a clean-up crew assigned, and is working with the property owner.

There was no danger to the public, nor passing traffic on the highway due to the leak.
