Structure fire in City of Rice Lake

On January 4th, 2025 at 1842 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, along with Rice Lake, Canosia, Lakewood and MN Air National Guard Fire Departments along with the Mayo ambulance, were dispatched to a structure fire in the 4200 block of Schultz Road in the city of Rice Lake. It was reported the homeowner was experiencing possible smoke inhalation and had burns to his hands and was at a neighbor's residence. It was reported that no one else was at the residence but a dog was unaccounted for. The dog was later located deceased inside of the residence.

Upon initial response from emergency personnel, it was discovered the structure was fully involved. The victim was conscious and alert and attended to by medical personnel and transported to Essentia Health Duluth for his injuries.

The MN State Fire Marshal's office was contacted regarding the fire. There is no reason to suspect foul play at this point. The victim was offered the assistance of the Red Cross.
