ATV through the ice on St. Louis River

On December 19, 2024, at 1454 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Duluth Police Department, Duluth Fire Department, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, US Coast Guard and Mayo Ambulance, were dispatched to an ATV that had reportedly gone through the ice on the St. Louis River near Spirit Mountain. It was unclear how long the ATV had been there or if anyone was in distress.

First responding rescue crews made their way across the ice to check for anyone in distress. Upon arriving, footprints were found leading away from the ATV and onto land. It was also learned around noon a male was seen walking near Tate & Lyle and security footage was later reviewed and the person appeared to match that of the registered owner of the ATV. A phone number was located for the owner, and he was contacted and confirmed he was the only one and was safe.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to use caution on the ice as ice depths across the area can fluctuate due to various conditions. We would also like to stress that if you find yourself in a situation like this, please call 911 and advise us, so we aren't tying up a large amount of emergency resources searching for you when an event is reported.
