Lost Hikers located in Bear Head State Park

On October 12th, 2024, at 6:11 pm, a hiker in the Bear Head State Park area called 911, looking for assistance in getting out of the woods.  Due to the poor cell coverage in the area, responding Deputies were unable to make contact with the hiker.  The St. Louis County Rescue Squad was called out to assist with a search of the area.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Dispatch center had been able to get the GPS coordinates of the caller's location, when they originally called 911.  The lost hiker was able to call 911 a second time and inform the Dispatcher that there were two hikers.  They were instructed to stay where they were.

Deputies arrived at Bear Head State Park which is located between the City of Tower and the City of Ely and used a drone to locate the lost hikers in a very remote area.  Rescue Squad members were able to walk to the lost hikers and get them out of the woods.  Neither party needed medical attention but neither party was prepared to spend the night in the woods.  Both hikers were visiting the area and not familiar with Bear Head State Park's rough terrain.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.
