BWCA call for service 

On October 6th at approximately 1103 hours, the St Louis County Rescue Squad and deputies were dispatched to the report of a capsized canoe on Big Shell Lake located in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area – BWCA.

It was reported that the two individuals, who had been occupying the canoe, we safe on land however were soaking wet without any gear. Due to potential hypothermic conditions the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Air Rescue Team – MART was dispatched to assist.

Upon the arrival of MART, it was learned that the two individuals were able to retrieve some of their gear and were making their way back to their vehicles. After determining that the two individuals were no longer in danger all rescue resources related to this call were cancelled.

It should be noted for clarification that while rescue resources were being coordinated for the BWCA call, law enforcement was alerted to a second water emergency call at approximately 1126 hours.

It was reported that a National Park Service boat had capsized on Namakan Lake while assisting some campers. Tragically as the National Park Service reported, one of their Rangers lost his life in the line of duty during this incident. The three campers, who were uninjured, where located and transported to Crane Lake to meet with law enforcement.
