Forestry Day to welcome fifth graders from 12 schools into the woods
Fifth graders from a dozen schools in southern St. Louis County will spend part of their day in the woods next Tuesday as part of the 40th annual 5th Grade Forestry Field Day. Forestry Day is a natural resource education outreach event sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of The Society of American Foresters. It will be held September 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at three locations: Lester Park, Chester Park and Upper Spirit Mountain. In the event of rain, activities will be postponed to the following day.
Students will learn about tree identification, sustainable use of forestry products, safe hiking to leave no trace, and more. There will also be demonstrations involving a portable sawmill, woodland animals from the zoo, and a wildland fire fighting rig.
Professionals representing a range of forest industry roles will provide the presentations and interactive demonstrations for students. This includes staff from the St. Louis County Land and Minerals Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, 1854 Treaty Authority, US Forest Service, Potlatch Deltic, Two by Forestry, Lake Superior Zoo, and Superior Hiking Trail Association.
Fifth grade students from the following schools are scheduled to participate: South Ridge, Pike Lake, Many Rivers Montessori, Merrit Creek Academy, Stowe, Marshall, Chester Creek, Congdon, Homecroft, Lester Park, Lakewood, and North Shore Community School.
Forestry Field Day is sponsored by Louisiana Pacific, Barko Hydraulics, Bell Timber, Nelson Shims, Potlatch Deltic, Watters Excavating and Countryside Rides.
