Campfire accident
On August 30, 2024 at approximately 8:20 PM, area first responders and law enforcement were dispatched to the report of 3 people sustaining serious burns due to a fire exploding. The incident occurred at an address located in the 12000 block of Jaranson Road, located in French Township, which is located approximately 20 miles north of Hibbing.
Upon the arrival of emergency services, it was learned that several families and friends had gathered to celebrate the holiday weekend and were preparing to enjoy an evening campfire when an unknown flammable liquid was used to start the fire. The exploding flames subsequently caused burn and inhalation injuries to 8 individuals ranging in ages from 14 to over 60.
A child, who sustained serious burns, was airlifted to a Twin Cities hospital for advanced care. Several other burn victims, sustaining injuries describe as being minor to serious, were transported by ambulance or private vehicle to an area hospital.
Tragically, a 53-year-old Hibbing man died as a result of his injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

14-year-old female from Saginaw, MN
