Fatal House Fire Old Hwy 61 in Midway Twp

On August 18, 2024 at approximately 2335 hours the St. Lous County Sheriff's Office and Proctor Fire Department were dispatched to a house fire in the 5300 block of Old Hwy 61 in Midway Township.  The house fire was reported by a passerby. The Proctor Fire Department requested mutual aid from the Hermantown Fire Department, Solway Fire Department, Esko Fire Department and the Air National Guard Fire Department.  After approximately two hours of fighting the fire, a deceased male was located in the living room area of the house.  The deceased male is believed to be the homeowner and the lone resident of the address, 61-year-old Michael Oneil.  Positive identification is still pending results from the medical examiner's office.

The house is considered a total loss. No other individuals were injured or died as a result of the house fire.  According to the State Fire Marshall the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature at this time.  The fire is still under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshall's Office.
