 Fatal ATV crash

On July 27th, 2024, at approximately 3:40 P.M. area first responders were dispatched to the report of an ATV crash on a trail in Balkan Township, between the cities of Chisholm and Buhl, in St. Louis County.

Responding deputies arrived and located a side-by-side ATV that was upright but appeared to have been rolled due to the damage to the roof. The 29 yr old male driver from Chisholm, MN and his 31 yr old male passenger from Hibbing, MN, were both not wearing their seatbelts or helmets, and were both thrown from the machine.

The driver was transported to University Medical Center Mesabi - Fairview in Hibbing, where he was treated and released. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office. Initial indications are that speed, alcohol, and not using appropriate safety restraints are contributing factors.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Chisholm Police Department, Chisholm Ambulance, Chisholm Fire Department, St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Rescue Squad, and Lifelink Air Ambulance.
