Traffic Pursuit Hibbing

On 6/20/24 at approximately 1259 hours a St. Louis County Investigator encountered a Westbound Chevy Silverado Pickup on Hwy 37 that crossed over the centerline and nearly struck the squad car head on. The Investigator was forced almost completely off the road and turned around to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle that had continued Westbound and then turned North onto Hwy 169 at the roundabout in the city of Hibbing. The driver stopped initially and was found to have active warrants out of Crow Wing County. The driver was advised that he was under arrest and refused to exit the vehicle and then fled the stop at a high rate of speed and driving erratically Northbound on Hwy 169. Initially squads pursued but due to the danger and the driver's conduct and location within the city of Hibbing the pursuit was terminated at the bulk tanks in the city of Hibbing as the vehicle fled Northbound on Hwy 169 toward the City of Chisholm

A short time later several callers reported this vehicle driving at high rates of speed and driving very erratically entering the construction zone in Chisholm which extends to Mt. Iron. Traffic narrows to one lane and the suspect vehicle was intentionally running cars off the road and striking construction barrels as it continued Northbound. While doing so the suspect vehicle damaged another vehicle with a struck construction barrel and also nearly struck a crew of construction workers present in the work zone near Buhl. Due to the public safety risk Deputies re-engaged with the suspect vehicle in attempts to stop the vehicle utilizing stop sticks as the vehicle approached Mt. Iron. The suspect vehicle continued to drive at a high rate of speed and very erratically still intentionally striking construction barrels. In doing so a struck barrel by the suspect vehicle was launched into the path of a pursuing deputy striking the hood and going through the windshield of the squad car. Very minor injuries due to broken glass to the deputy and damage to the squad were sustained. The suspect vehicle then entered the median just west of Walmart on Hwy 169 and hit a crossover which disabled the vehicle which causing it to come to a stop a short distance later. The suspect, Kaleb Clark Sandy DOB 07/13/1999, was taken into custody, transported to Essentia Health Virginia to be checked out and then lodged at the St. Louis County Jail in Virginia pending charges of Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle, 2nd Degree Assault, Reckless Driving, Damage to Property, and DWI.
