St. Louis County Board approves disaster declaration, updates on flood recovery efforts

During an emergency meeting in Virginia, the St. Louis County Board unanimously approved a disaster declaration, which enables the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Division of Emergency Management to apply for funding assistance from the state and FEMA on behalf of itself along with cities, townships, unorganized areas, and public utilities within the County.

Emergency Management staff continues to work with local jurisdictions, providing resources and compiling damage reports and estimates.

County staff have created an online resource page for anyone affected by this storm. It can be accessed at stlouiscountymn.gov/flood. The page includes a link to a map showing current road closures. It includes an online form for property owners to file damage reports with the County Assessor for possible property tax relief. It also has safety information for property owners with wells and septic systems that may have flooded.

Public Works crews remain busy repairing washouts as able and shoring up road shoulders. Currently 43 county roads are closed; of those, 18 are newly closed as water levels have risen in some areas, while 18 roads that had been closed yesterday have now been repaired and reopened.

Motorists are reminded to not drive around barricades or through standing water as it can be unclear how deep it is. Additionally, there could be hazards hidden beneath the surface. Anyone encountering unsafe road conditions should call 911 to report the location. People should stay vigilant and use caution near floodwaters, and keep children and pets away from fast moving water or any water that may be contaminated due to flooded sewer systems.
