Public meeting to discuss proposed J-Turn Project on Highway 169 in Mt. Iron

St. Louis County Public Works will host an informational open house to discuss an intersection safety improvement project in Mountain Iron. The intersection of Nichols Avenue and Mud Lake Road with U.S. Highway 169 will be reconfigured into a J-turn as part of a project planned for 2025.

The open house will be Thursday, June 20, at 6 p.m., at the Mt. Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Drive South. MnDOT and County engineers will provide information about the project and the reasons for it and will be available to answer questions. There will also be interactive demonstrations to show how to navigate a J-turn intersection and the safety benefits of it.

The high severity crash history at this intersection led to it being a priority for a safety improvement project. Currently the only traffic controls at this intersection are stop signs on the side streets. Engineers met with city leaders and other stakeholders throughout the planning process.

People who live near or travel through the area are encouraged to attend the public meeting. Anyone unable to attend but who would like to learn more can contact Traffic Engineer Vic Lund at lundv@stlouiscountymn.gov or 218-625-3873.
