Off-Road Vehicle Crash with Multiple Injured

On 05/06/2024, shortly after 10:00pm, emergency responders were dispatched to a side-by-side off-road vehicle crash near the intersection of N. Pike Lake Road and Helm Road in Canosia Township.  Initial information indicated that there were four riders on the same machine, and all had sustained injuries as the result of the crash.

Four people were ultimately transported to Duluth area hospitals with injuries.  One 17 yoa female was transported with life-threatening critical injuries while the three other occupants (female 18, female 23, male 27) sustained what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash, and the incident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Assisting with this incident was: Canosia Township Fire Department, Hermantown Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Mayo Ambulance, Life Link, and Nascar Towing.  

UPDATE:

Emma Jean Malmquist, of Duluth is the 17year old female who was transported to Essentia Duluth with critical injuries.  Unfortunately, on May 19th she died as a result of those injuries.

This incident remains under active investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. A referral to the County Attorney's Office is expected in the coming weeks.
