Morris Thomas Road construction, closure begins April 15
The first project of the 2024 road construction season for St. Louis County Public Works begins Monday, April 15. That's when work resumes to reconstruct Morris Thomas Road in Duluth.
Morris Thomas Road will be closed to through traffic between Hutchinson Road and Piedmont Avenue beginning Monday and continuing through September. Signs will be posted directing traffic to use Haines Road and Piedmont Avenue.
The project is a continuation of work that began last year that includes the complete reconstruction of Morris Thomas Road from Haines Road to Piedmont Avenue, replacement of watermains beneath it, a new sidewalk on the south side of the road, plus new curbs and gutters. Last year's efforts focused on the segment between Haines Road and Hutchinson Road. This year will complete phase two between Hutchinson Road and Piedmont Avenue.
Property owners will be allowed to drive through the construction area to access their homes for the majority of the project and will be communicated with in advance of any periods when they cannot.
The project is being completed in partnership between St. Louis County Public Works and the City of Duluth. Northland Constructors is the contractor. More information can be found online at
