St. Louis County begins sending 2024 proposed property tax notices

The St. Louis County Auditor's Office has begun the process of sending out Proposed Property Tax Notices for 2024. These notices are sent in staggered batches over the next week, which means some property owners may not receive theirs until the end of the month.

The notice, which is often referred to as a Truth in Taxation notice, gives a property owner a first idea of what their property taxes would be in 2024 based on the maximum levies approved in September by the County, as well as the city or township, school district and any other entities with taxing authority where the property is located. This notice is not a bill, and amounts may change as each jurisdiction approve their final budget and levy.

The notice also provides details on when each taxing authority will hold a public meeting on its budget, giving people opportunity to give feedback and ask questions.

St. Louis County is holding two public meetings regarding the 2024 budget. Representatives from the Auditor's Office and Assessor's Department will be at both to talk with people who have questions about their notice. The meetings will be Monday, November 20, 7 p.m., at the St. Louis County Courthouse in Virginia; and Monday, November 27, 7 p.m. at the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth.

Anyone with questions about their property's valuation or classification should contact the St. Louis County Assessor's Department, as these topics are not addressed at the public budget meetings. The Assessor's Department can be reached at 218-726-2304.

Anyone who has not received their Proposed Property Tax Notice by November 30 can contact the St. Louis County Auditor's Office to request a copy. The Auditor's Office can be reached at 218-726-2383, extension 2, or email propertytax@stlouiscountymn.gov.
