Be Prepared. What to do with Your Septic System During a Flood
With all the heavy snowfall this winter, and deeper than usual snowpack for this time of year, there is a high risk for spring flooding to occur. It’s especially important to educate property owners on what to do with their septic systems during a flood. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently published some new informational documents to prepare homeowners and contractors alike if such an instance was to occur. To access the MCPA information, click here: LINK.
Some proactive questions to consider as we enter the spring season: • Is your property located in a flood-prone area? • Do you have a licensed plumber and/or septic contractor that assists you with your septic needs? • Are your system inspection caps in place? • If your system has a backflow preventer, do you know where the manual valve is located? • Do you know how to turn off all electrical devices associated with your system? • Do you have a contact for well testing in case of contamination?
If you struggle to answer the following questions, feel free to reach out to the OSW Division to provide the additional resources needed.
