Plane crash near Grassy Point leaves one male deceased

On February 24, 2023 at approximately 1608 hours, area responders were dispatched to a reported plane crash near Grassy Point. Multiple witnesses contacted 911 emergency communications to report the crash. Upon arrival by first responders, a lone 52-year-old male from  Hermantown was located deceased at the scene. No one else was in the aircraft at the time of the crash. No structures in the area were damaged and the crash happened on the ice of the harbor. 

The Midwest Medical Examiners office responded for the death investigation. The FAA and NTSB have been notified and are also responding to the scene for the crash investigation. This is currently an ongoing investigation.

Agencies that responded; St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Duluth Fire Department, US Coast Guard and Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

 

UPDATE:  The deceased has been identified as DAVID RATHBUN, a 52-year-old from Hermantown, MN.  The crash remains under investigation by the FFA and NTSB
