Incident Summary:
Area first responders and law enforcement responded to the report of a 2 vehicle personal injury crash near the intersection of South Ugstad Road and Ugstad Junction in Midway Township this morning around 08:50 AM.
From the initial investigation it appeared 48 year old Leah Joy Sarko 11/20/1973 was traveling eastbound on Ugstad Junction. An 11 year old juvenile male was also in the vehicle. As Sarko turned northbound on Ugstad Road, it appears a vehicle driven by 18 year old Jesse James Kowalczak 12/14/2003 was traveling southbound on Ugstad Road.
Kowalczak struck Sarko in a T-bone fashion. The collision resulted in the death of Sarko. The 11 year old was transported via Mayo ambulance to Essentia Health Duluth and is currently listed as stable, non-life threatening injuries. Kowalczak was transported via Mayo ambulance to St. Luke's with stable, non-life threatening injuries.
Heavy fog in the area and speed appear to be contributing factors. The accident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office as well as the Minnesota State Patrol.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Proctor Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Proctor Fire Department, Mayo ambulance service and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.
