First tax forfeited property auction of 2022 now open online

The list includes eight lakeshore lots (some accessible by water only), plus additional parcels with river frontage. Also included is a four-bedroom home in Virginia, 12 lots that have been cleaned up and structures razed, plus buildable lots and recreational land throughout the county.
In 2021, the St. Louis County Land and Minerals Department successfully sold 185 tax forfeited properties through online auctions totaling more than $3.5 million, plus an additional 81 properties that, after not being purchased at auction, were sold over the counter for nearly $750,000. Revenue from these sales supports the work of the Land and Minerals Department.
Any revenue over and above expenses is distributed by the County Board to various funds and local jurisdictions as provided by statute. A portion may be used for timber development or economic development purposes, and the remaining balance is distributed to the county’s general fund, school districts, and townships or cities.
For the current auction, a list of properties, as well as a catalog with photos, maps and details about each one, including the starting bid price, is available online at stlouiscountymn.gov/landsales, or by calling the Land and Minerals Department at (218) 726-2606. Catalogs also can be found at numerous gas stations, grocery stores and other businesses throughout the county.
To be eligible to bid, a person cannot have any delinquent property taxes on property they already own in St. Louis County. People who have delinquent property taxes must first pay what they owe before purchasing at auction or over the counter from the Available List.
Within St. Louis County, there are nearly 900,000 acres of tax forfeited land, which the County's Land and Minerals Department is responsible for managing. Most of the land is maintained for resource management; however, the county also encourages the sale of land that is not suitable for management as a way to encourage development and increase the property tax base.
To learn more about the land sale, view properties available for purchase at the auctions or over the counter, or to subscribe to receive email notifications about future sales, visit stlouiscountymn.gov/landsales or call the Land and Minerals Department at (218) 726-2606.
This 1.97 acre property in Fredenberg Township includes approximately 750 feet of frontage on Fish Lake. The starting bid is $114,700.
This two-story home in Virginia includes four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The starting bid is $37,100.
This 40-acre parcel in Bassett Township includes 435 feet of frontage on Petrell Creek. The starting bid is $58,100.
