Incident Summary:

Area first responders and law enforcement responded to the report of a possible structure fire being reported in the 3500 block of the Long Lake Road south of Gilbert, Minnesota.

At approximately 2:50 AM, St. Louis County 911 received a call from a female indicating that she was outside at her boyfriend’s cabin and could hear an audible fire alarm sounding inside the cabin in addition to seeing smoke.  The female indicated that the cabin door was locked and that she believed her boyfriend, identified as Grant Maki, was sleeping inside the cabin. The female indicated that she has been unable to make contact Maki.

Upon the arrival of first responders, they forced entry into the moderately smoke-filled cabin and located a Maki sleeping inside. Firefighters escorted Maki from the cabin, under his own power, to an awaiting ambulance. Maki was treated and released by EMS on scene for smoke inhalation.

An issue with a wood stove located inside the cabin was determined to be the cause of the smoke.

The incident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting agencies included: Lakeland Fire Department, Fayal Fire Department and Biwabik Ambulance.
