Incident Summary: 

On 12/05/2021, at approximately 1:03am, 911 dispatchers received a second hand report from a person who said they had received a call from a friend stating he had gone through the ice with his snowmobile on Rice Lake north of Duluth.  No other information was given at that time and multiple area first responders responded to the scene at the Rice Lake Dam public access.  An unoccupied vehicle was located in the parking lot which also had an empty snowmobile trailer attached.  The owner of the vehicle was ultimately reached by phone and it was determined that he had in fact broke through the ice earlier while operating a snowmobile on the ice while towing a sled full of ice fishing gear.  The 35 year old male from Superior was able to self-rescue and walk back to shore where he called a family member for a ride.  It was determined this male had been picked up and was brought home without any injuries prior to the emergency call being made to 911.  It is currently unknown if the snowmobile and fishing gear are completely submerged, and responders did not access the lake ice after learning there was no emergency out on the lake. 

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone that ice conditions vary from lake to lake, and to use extreme caution if you choose to venture out onto the ice during this early part of the ice fishing season.
