Incident Summary:

On Monday May 31st, 2021, at approximately 2:20 P.M., St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies received a 911 call of a water emergency on Trout Lake, within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, via cell phone. Due to poor cell phone reception, it took a period of time to ascertain from the reporting party that a 51 year old male had fallen out of a boat into the water on the North arm of the lake, and had been underwater for approximately 2-3 minutes.

It was learned that other passengers in his boat, along with other area boaters who were summoned to help, were able to pull the victim up out of the water, and eventually up to shore where they performed CPR for a period of time. Citizens continued their first aid attempts until  EMS personnel arrived on scene and took over life saving efforts.

After quite some time and exhausting all available resources, it was determined that the male party was deceased.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the victim had fishing from the bow of a boat and had been last seen seated in a pedestal type chair. Other boating passengers stated that they suddenly heard a splash and turned to see the victim, who was not wearing a personal floatation device, had fallen into the water and had immediately submerged.

The incident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Midwest Medical Examiners office.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Tower Ambulance, US Forest Service, MN DNR, and the Ely Ambulance.

The Sheriff's Office would like to remind the boating population that despite warmer air temperatures, water temperatures are remaining quite cold. Therefore a personal floatation device is critical to aid in surviving any unfortunate water related incidents at this, or any time of the year.
