Incident Summary:
On the above date and time, St. Louis County 911 was notified of an off-road vehicle personal injury accident 1/2 mile north of the public access boat landing on Boulder Lake. It was determined a side-by-side UTV flipped due to an equipment failure while driving on the frozen lake, and two juvenile males were injured.
The Gnesen Volunteer Fire Department, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Mayo Ambulance, Lifelink III Air Ambulance, and deputies of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Responders located the crash site on the frozen lake, medically stabilized two juvenile male patients, and evacuated them to the landing. A 12 year-old male was transported by Lifelink III air ambulance with a broken femur; a 6 year-old was transported by Mayo Ambulance with a head laceration. Both parties were taken to St. Luke's Hospital. The juveniles were not wearing helmets or safety belts at the time of the accident.
The Sheriff's Office would like to encourage operators to exercise caution when using recreational vehicles on frozen waters as warming temperatures cause ice conditions to deteriorate. In addition, the Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that all passengers and operators of ATVs under the age of 18 are required to wear a DOT-approved helmet and utilize safety belts (when equipped) at all times while the vehicle is being operated on public land, water, or right-of-way.
