Incident Summary:
On September 22, 2020, St. Louis County Deputies responded to a burglary report in the 4100 block of Lost Lake Road. Several items were taken during the burglary. Surveillance equipment at the residence allowed deputies to get a physical description of both male suspects along with a detailed description of the vehicle used in the burglary, including the vehicle license plate.
On September 23, 2020, at approximately 1056 hours, a St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputy spotted the suspect vehicle on Lost Lake Road near Bodas Road in Fayal Township and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. After a second deputy arrived, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Johnathan Cope, ignored commands to turn off the vehicle and hand over the keys. Cope accelerated, causing the deputy to have to run next to the vehicle for 10-15 yards before being able to disengage from Cope's vehicle. Cope led deputies on a pursuit that lasted approximately 13 miles. Cope was able to avoid stop sticks and a squad was used to end the pursuit using a P.I.T. maneuver. Cope was arrested without further incident. Neither Cope or any deputies/officers were injured during this pursuit. Cope was subsequently booked into the St. Louis County Jail in Virginia, MN, for 3rd Degree Burglary, Felony Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle, and multiple felony warrants. Additional charges, including Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, are pending.
The Eveleth Police Department and the Gilbert Police Department assisted in this incident.
