Incident Summary:

On the above date and time the St. Louis County Sheriff's office was contacted by a party camping on a remote campsite in the BWCA on Clark Lake located Northwest of Burntside Lake in Ely. The reporting party had called 911 to report his bear hunting partner was lost and he was unable to locate him at this time. The reporting party indicated that the two men had been walking on a path when his partner indicated he needed a rest due to a sore knee. The reporting party continued down a path and returned to the location he left his partner and was unable to locate him. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad was dispatched and flew in with assistance of the US Forest Service beaver to make contact with the reporting party just prior to sunset and nightfall. Several other searchers entered the area by boat and began hiking the trails in the area in attempt to locate the lost party. At approximately 0108 hrs on 9/1/20 the MN State Patrol helicopter was able to locate the lost party 1.5 miles due West of Clark Lake on Battle Lake. The victim had made a fire on the shoreline and was located by the State Helicopter. SLC Rescue Squad members were able to navigate the rough terrain on foot and make contact with the party and verified that he was the missing individual. He had no injuries and was found in good health. Due to terrain the searchers and missing party remained on Battle Lake until daybreak and were flown out by USFS beaver plane. As of 0830hrs on 9/1/20 the party had been flown out and returned to his Clark Lake campsite and was reunited with his hunting partner to continue their hunting trip.
