Rice Lake Road in Duluth to reopen by Thursday evening, after 3+ months construction
Construction on Rice Lake Road in Duluth is wrapping up, and the road is expected to re-open Thursday, August 27, by 5 p.m. The $4 million improvement project involved reconstructing more than half a mile of Rice Lake Road, widening the intersection at Arlington Avenue and Arrowhead Road and making improvements to Technology Drive.
The project was designed to improve traffic flow and safety throughout the area, while also better accommodating pedestrians and other forms of transportation. Work on the project was accelerated earlier this spring when it was announced that schools - specifically the nearby North Star Academy - were closing early due to the pandemic. A relatively dry summer also enabled work to proceed ahead of schedule.
This was a joint project involving St. Louis County and the City of Duluth. KGM Contractors of Angora was the project contractor. The county was responsible for work on Rice Lake Road and the intersection at Arlington Avenue, including new traffic signals, widening Rice Lake Road to accommodate additional turn lanes, and adding new curbs and gutters and sidewalks. The city's portion of the project included widening Technology Drive and adding a sidewalk along the north side of Arrowhead Road.
Finishing work is still being done in the area, so motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution any time traveling through or near a work zone.
