Incident Summary: On 07-01-2020, at approximately 11:18 A.M. , the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office along with Vermilion Lake Fire/First Responders and Tower Ambulance Service responded to the Pike Bay Lodge at 9422 Hearthside Dr. in rural Tower, MN for a reported boat accident that occurred on Lake Vermilion. Three adult males were traveling in a boat along the East side of Ely Island in Breitung Township, when the driver reached for a life jacket that was about to blow out of the boat. The driver inadvertently turned the motor tiller handle to the left causing the boat to quickly turn to the right. The male bow passenger was thrown from the boat. The driver fell over inside the boat and struck his head on the side of the boat. The middle passenger was able to regain control of the motor and eventually assisted the male that had fallen overboard back into the boat. The boat was driven back to the Pike Bay Lodge where the accident was reported. The male driver was treated on scene and transported by the Tower Ambulance Service to the Essentia Health Virginia Emergency Room for a minor head injury. The passenger that was thrown overboard was treated at the scene and released. The names are being withheld at this time pending family notifications of the accident.
