Incident Summary:

Early this afternoon the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office along with other area first response agencies, responded to the call of a Kayak that had capsized on the Duluth Harbor. The single occupant of the Kayak was reported to be in distress. A nearby citizen with a motor boat was able to reach Mcleete who had been in the Kayak when it overturned. Mcleete was wearing her life jacket at the time of the incident and was uninjured.

Mcleete had recently attached a sail the kayak she was operating. A strong gust of wind had caught the sail, overturning the kayak.

As we start our summer off in Minnesota, this incident a good reminder of the life saving capabilities a properly worn personal floatation device (PFD) can have. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office urges all who are out enjoying water sports in the area to use one while doing so.

Assisting Agencies:

St. Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad, Duluth Police Department, Duluth Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - Enforcement Division, and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.
