Auditor's Office offers new filing options for those seeking public office

The filing period for numerous public offices begins Tuesday, May 19, and lasts through Friday, June 2, 2020. However, like so many other activities, the process for filing will be slightly different this year in St. Louis County due to COVID-19.

With the filing location - the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth - currently closed to the public in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the County Auditor has announced new filing options. Candidates will be able to file by mail, using the secure drop box, or by appointment for curbside drop off. Regardless of the filing option a candidate chooses, all documents and fees must be physically received by the Auditor's Office by June 2 at 5 p.m.

To file by mail, candidates should mail their completed and notarized Affidavit of Candidacy form and filing fee to: St. Louis County Auditor’s Office, 100 N. 5th Ave. W. Room 214, Duluth, MN 55802. Once received, the Auditor’s Office will contact you to confirm receipt.

Candidates also may file their completed and notarized Affidavit of Candidacy form and filing fee by leaving it in the secure drop box located at the 2nd Street entrance to the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth. As with mailed in filing, the Auditor’s Office will contact the candidate to confirm receipt.

A third option is to file in person outside the courthouse via curbside filing. Candidates should contact the Auditor's Office to schedule an appointment between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (or until 5 p.m. on June 2.) Auditor's staff will meet the candidate outside the 2nd Street entrance to the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth. To schedule a curbside appointment, call (218) 726-2385 or email elections@stlouiscountymn.gov. Note: county offices will closed, with no appointments available on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

Among the elected positions that require filing at the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth are county commissioners, 6th Judicial Offices, and North and South Soil and Water Conservation District supervisors. Candidates for state offices can file at the county courthouse if they reside in St. Louis County, or with the Minnesota Secretary of State.  Candidates for city, township and school district races should file in their applicable jurisdiction during the correct filing period. A complete list of positions and filing locations can be found online at stlouiscountymn.gov/vote
