Road construction on Rice Lake Road near Arrowhead/Arlington begins Monday in Duluth

The early closure of schools has accelerated one St. Louis County road construction project. Temporary traffic signals are being installed this week so that construction can begin Monday, May 4 to reconstruct a little more than half a mile of Rice Lake Road, widen the intersection at Arlington Avenue and Arrowhead Road and make improvements to Technology Drive.  The project will improve traffic flow and safety throughout the area, while also better accommodating pedestrians and other forms of transportation.

During the first one to two weeks of the project, motorists may see delays, but no road closures. Anyone traveling through the area is reminded to slow down and use caution when in or near a work zone.

By May 18, and potentially sooner, Rice Lake Road will be closed between Technology Drive and Arrowhead Road. The closure is expected to last until September, and detour routes will be marked. Anyone needing to access Technology Drive should do so from the north. The starting date for the road closure had originally been set to begin in June following the end of the school year to minimize traffic impacts to North Star Academy, but now this work can begin sooner.

This is a joint project involving St. Louis County and the City of Duluth. The county is responsible for work on Rice Lake Road and the intersection at Arlington Avenue. This involves new traffic signals, widening Rice Lake Road to accommodate additional turn lanes, and adding new curbs and gutters and sidewalks.

The city will be widening Technology Drive and adding a sidewalk along the north side of Arrowhead Road.

Total cost of the project is just over $4 million. KGM Contractors of Angora is the project contractor.
