Incident Summary:
On Sunday April 26th, 2020 at approximately 12:08 hours, Deputies from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office attempted to stop and arrest the driver of a stolen vehicle in the rural area surrounding the City of Virginia. When deputies tried to stop the stolen vehicle, the driver led deputies and officers from surrounding agencies on a high speed pursuit.
Officers were able to deploy spike strips (tire deflation device) on the fleeing vehicle which ultimately slowed the vehicle, however the driver continued to drive in a dangerous manner causing a risk to the safety of the other citizens traveling in the area.
Due to the risk to public safety, deputies attempted to perform a P.I.T. maneuver to end the pursuit. As deputies were attempting to end the pursuit, the driver lost control of the stolen vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and roll over multiple times. The driver and lone occupant of the stolen vehicle was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.
Deputies immediately performed first aid on the driver until other emergency responders arrived on scene and subsequently the suspect was air lifted to a Duluth area hospital for treatment of non life threatening injures.
The driver will be facing several felony charges once released from the hospital.
The length of the pursuit was approximately 15 miles long, and there was no other damages or injuries reported to the public or officers during the course of this event.
The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Virginia Police Dept, Gilbert Police Dept. Eveleth Police Dept. and the MN State Patrol.
